What is Anaerobic Digestion?

Anaerobic Digestion is considered to be the most appropriate technology for dealing with agricultural and food waste and generating useful renewable energy.

It is the biological thermal treatment of organic waste in a controlled environment, generating biogas for conversion to electricity and heat and also a useful waste bi-product (digestate).

Anaerobic Digestion

Organic material is fed into the Digester. This material can be a crop (maize is a popular choice), waste product from production, or manure. In fact it can be almost anything, as diverse as vegetable fats and grass cuttings! The material reacts in tanks with bacteria to produce methane.

This in turn powers a CHP (combined heat and power) plant which produces electricity, either for use onsite or for exporting offsite into the National Grid. In both cases, there are attractive financial incentives.

In the production process, there are two bi-products; heat – which can be used locally to prevent the burning of fossil fuels and also digestate – which is the left over product after the methane has been produced. In most cases digestate is an excellent fertiliser or soil conditioner.

Why Anaerobic Digestion Works?

It converts waste streams into useful energy. The feedstocks include agricultural biomass and residues, animal dung and soluble organic matter.

Biogas yield is dependant on the proportion of energy-rich material fractions in the feedstock and their useful organic dry matter.

The best yields are produced from the use of organic food waste and whole crops such as wheat or maize silage rather than animal waste, which has already been through the digestion process. Household food waste should be considered as a valuable energy resource.

Biogas plants vary depending on the project scale and type of feedstock. They comprise a waste reception and storage area, pasteurisation plant, anaerobic digester and processing plant, digestate processing and storage, biogas filtering, combined heat and power plant, instrumentation and controls.

Bio waste is converted in the digester into energy from bio-chemical reactions. These may require bacteria to be added and process temperatures to be raised to suit.

Biogas generation from anaerobic digestion reduces waste that may otherwise be sent to landfill, reducing long term CO2 emissions and increasing diversity and security of energy supply. Alternatively, scrubbed biogas, bio methane, can be injected in the national gas grid or used as a transport fuel.

Anaerobic digestion is an approved technology under the UK Governments FIT scheme. This encourages financial support for small-scale low carbon electricity generation.

Energy Monitoring and Reporting

Carbon Chain offer one of the most versatile and effective energy and plant monitoring and reporting services available.

We have identified that many businesses do not want to be sent metered energy data and graphs that require time to interpret and understand. Energy data relating to building and plant performance can be complex and to that end Carbon Chain have teamed up with The Energy Practice Ltd (building services and energy consultants) to assess the data, understand the building and the plant to provide regular feedback summaries giving advice on how to reduce your energy consumption.

We will not monitor any building without first visiting the premises and gain an understanding of its use, construction and the mechanical and electrical services. Only then can energy performance be properly interpreted and energy saving advice be given.

To ensure we provide the best possible reporting we offer many metering and monitoring options, starting with the utility meters we are able add more check meters according to your budget and requirements.

Where possible we will communicate with the building management system and monitor many other items for information. For example we can also monitor plant temperatures and water temperatures so failures and temperatures outside what would normally be expected will raise an early warning so we can notify your maintenance team.
